Mace. A swallowed penny. Trip to the ER

There ya see it- Mace's penny.

Right snug in his abdomen.

He did it last Monday evening. First day of Spring Break.

The kids were down playing tennis, I was cooking dinner, and Ry was still at work.

All of a sudden, I heard a terrible noise…one I did not recognize.

I heard the noises come from his throat and I knew instantly it was bad.

(after 4 kids you learn what noises prompt (yell, cry..etc) immediate attention -

Well this was the time..... Mace was choking.

I ran to him and he was holding his throat, trying to speak... "I. am. choke." "a quarter". he said I knew that he hadn't fully swallowed it and needed to get to the doctor quick.

I also knew if I panicked or screamed, Mace would too...thus constricting his little esophagus even more and choking even quicker.

With my son, Austin swallowing a penny at the age of 2, I knew he would be okay if Mace could just get the coin down to his stomach.

Well, Mason's penny was stuck. I could tell.

He couldn't move and instantly his body was reacting to the coin by foaming and causing major saliva to come up out of his mouth.

He started to cry, I told him to stay calm calm calm and I rubbed his little head.

I told him everything would be just fine.

We are blessed with a Children's Hospital 1 and 1/2 miles from our neighborhood.

I grabbed my cell phone, my purse and swooped Mace up into my arms.

We were off.

I didn't have time to buckle him up.

We had to get to the hospital.

More and more saliva was coming out of his mouth, I could tell his body was trying to exude the penny out. Mace had tears in his eyes but stayed strong.

I got to the hospital in less than one minute and walked right into triage and said,“ My son is currently choking on a coin, I need your help

They put me right into a bed and as I lay him down, said a little prayer in my heart,

and I told Mace to let the coin fall, to let it go down his throat.

The doctors came right in and helped him out.

TO say the least, he was okay.

In fact he was fine.

It took around 7 minutes to get the coin to pass through the 3 levels of the esophagus-

They talked to Mace and told him to let the coin fall and within minutes, he stopped choking up saliva and a little smile emerged.

He said the coin was still stuck and it hurt, but he felt better

Phew.

He was okay.

He had a bloody red mark where the coin went down his throat and he had a belly ache.

The doc's took x-rays to make sure the coin was down. And sure enough, it was.

They had Mace eat and drink, watched him for an hour or so, and we were free to go.

Knowing the prognosis: Watch his poop.

The coin should come out in 2 to 3 days.

It has now been 4 days and I believe the coin is down and out!

Poor Mace, but brave boy

I think the experience scared him more than anything.

He learned a good lesson about not putting things in your mouth. I was proud of him for being brave and letting the doctors do their thing.

What a big boy. Love him

A funny side note, it was around 5:30, Ry was with a client at work and all I texted him was: " Mace choking, Children's Hosp." He immediately excused himself and hopped on the toll road. (it gets him home in less than 5 minutes) He started driving ( around 90 mph) and he sees flashing lights....he got pulled over! frustrating! He told the cop to please understand, his child is choking and he needed to get there asap!..the cop took a quick look at his license and registration and said which hospital? Ry told him where, the cop seemed to believe him and said, "GO, but a warning that it won't help your son if you don't get their safely...." Now slow down and off you go." Ry did get to the hospital at about the same time Mace was okay. I texted the kids to walk home, and hurry and turn the oven off, dinner was burning. Everything ended up just fine. I appreciate everyone's help. and grateful to live in a country where we can have access to hospitals and doctors within minutes. What a blessing Fun to blog about all the "moments" us mom's live through and endure. We always say what a miracle our kids live through so many traumatic events. I am just grateful he is okay. Love ya Mace.

Cousin Love. Late nights. Fun Days.

We had the best weekend: the Memmott's came for a visit.
Madi, my niece, had a volleyball tournament in Denver
so (my sis) Jan brought Savy and McKay to come hang w/ us!
Ry was at March Madness for 4 days so it was great timing...
we got to just hang out and play!
I have lots of pics and fun times.
I will download today and post all the pics and fun!
We loved our weekend...
parks, swimming, shopping, eating out, Butterfly Pavilion, BYU game,
downtown Denver, and simply having FUN!
Currently it is Spring Break and today we hung
out in the 75 degree weather.
loved it.
except when Mace choked on a penny and we were off to the hospital!
yikes. but he is okay. I have a x-ray pic of it. cool.
(that's laters)

We played outside every day. The kids went to the Rec center and played (outdoor) tennis and bball. Then they explored the ponds and all the trails around. I didn't have my camera with me that moment. It would of made for some cute pics.

(Playing in the back yard. Jumping off our tramp:)

Jan had Madi's tournaments In Denver every day. I wanted to go but I also wanted the cousins to have adventures here. So on Friday after Madi's games, I went and picked Jan up! I had good quality time with her. She went w me to carpool to get Jake and then we headed to my favorite restaurant: La Hacienda! The best dinner

My sis, Jan and I

The next day the kids went swimming and to the Butterfly Pavilion. I took Jake to his game and the older cousins went to the Pavilion and played with the Butterflies (and the spiders!) They stayed for 3 hours!

(kids holding Rosie: a Tarantula! )

Over the weekend we all went to Madi's game in downtown Denver. It was so fun! Downtown is great. IT is full of energy and life.We snapped pics against an old, historic, school. Loved the bricks. It had inspiring sayings engraved in stone on the outside!

My Boys:) Ry came home from his 4 day adventures of March Madness. I was glad to have him home.

( I missed this guy a lot :)

p.s do I look tan? lol. I stayed outside all day w the kids and got my first big spring tan! (5 hours out!) IT was lovely!

She played in the Colorado Convention center in the heart of Downtown. We snapped a pic of the big blue bear. He is 3 stories tall!

Madi's team is ranked number one in Utah. They are an excellent team. They travel to Las Vegas, Reno, Denver, and Anaheim for tournaments.Madi, my niece is currently getting recruited for College Volleyball Scholarships.BYU, U of U and UVU all express interest. (she is a Junior in High school)
Madi's team
!

Madi is so athletic! She plays front row and spikes that ball! She is so powerful. IT was fun to watch her!

I had to snap of pic of my niece, Savannah too! Madi's sis. Downtown Denver(and RY of course checking all the Basketball scores! March Madness is a BIG deal around here!)

16th Street!

Denver is known for it's 16th street shopping. It's all outdoors. The street is blocked off..people are everywhere. We had a break in between Madi's games and headed off to lunch!

Niketown. After Madi's tourney was over. WE continued shopping.

We had to say our goodbye's. The bus was headed on back to Utah! They had a long ride ahead of them :) (they didn't get home till 3 a.m) BUT the Memmott's were super excited because they were headed to Hawaii the very next day! I was so jealous :)

We LOVED loved having Cousin LOVE. Thanks so much for the great times!

Our Journey. Sugarloaf. A lesson learned.

Ode to Sugarloaf,
Us Stott's love you.
We can't get enough of your amazing mountain.
We finally had a free weekend, so we ventured up
Boulder Canyon to hike our favorite spot.

WE can see your "sugarloaf hills" from our front porch and
kids can't wait to go back up on your mtn. top!
Yesterday, we went up..(no sports yay!)
They were thrilled.
WE had a great time....and I learned something...
or better words: reminded.
( And oh. my. goodness. Will you look at these views?!!
Jake and Mace "chillin'" on top of the world!
Loving the views, the sights, the sounds...)

With no family around, us Stott's venture.
WE have free time and it's ours. We love love being together.
And honestly I have had my moments of nostalgia for Utah,
(oh yes I do!) but when I have afternoons like this with my little family....
I am so happy. I am reminded.
I love being with us 6.
These are simple moments.
One that makes memories.
One that brings us together.
(almost to the top! Look at the mountains around us...breathtaking! )

We find the joy in little things:

like hikes up a mountain, a hawk's nest, throwing rocks over the hills,

and carving our names on our walking sticks.
WE are enjoying our time.
(they call it Little Switzerland...you can see why!)

Our journey to Colorado has been eye opening.

I have learned so much. I have grown so much.
I do miss my dear Utah.... and day's where I wish them back.
But, but I would never give back the time.
Time with just me, my kids, Ry.
Our little family.

WE will be back to Utah one day:
Sunday dinners, family parties, Holidays...we will.
But for now, we are creating our own memories,
forging new traditions, and learning to just love us.
And I am grateful for our moments.
(can you see the fire damage??)

For yesterday's simple reminder.
One I need often.

I. love. my. family.
and

our

adventures.
so thank you SugarLoaf.
Thank u for the sweet reminder.

Ry and I are enjoying our journey.
In . so. many. ways.

To many more....

and more, more, more.....

xo!
(Last pic of us in Georgetown. Summer train ride w/ Bageley's..
and then fishing at Clearcreek!
Sooo excited for Spring...we have a list of all the places we want to see!)

Mace the sharkface. Denver's Aquarium.

Downtown Denver Aquarium.
Mace the shark face.

A few weeks ago we went with Ashley and Aileen and kids to the aquarium.
Something we have wanted to go to since we moved here.
THey loved it. It was amazing all the fish, sharks, sting rays..etc.
Our favorite part: the bridge walkway with the water surrounding us. 360 views.
awesome.

IT was a great day.
Our next venture the Natural History Museum and the Kids Museum.
We just got a family pass to the zoo as well.
We are so excited for Spring and all the fun it will bring!
